  1. A baseball player of the early twentieth century, known for hitting home runs. He hit sixty home runs in 1927, a record for a 154-game season that stood until the late twentieth century. Ruth supposedly once pointed to a spot in the seats where he would hit his next home run, and then proceeded to hit the ball there. His real name was George Herman Ruth.
